Hazel L. Bumgarner of Justin was born August 9, 1916, and went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, August 12, after a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Belle Bumgarner, her sisters Mada Pennington and Lois Lewis.  She is survived by her nieces Marie Render of Denton and Gailya Kajihiro of Cedar Hill and her nephew Lyna Lewis of Garland.  She is also survived by an extended family of other nieces and nephews as well as an abundant number of former students that she considered \"her children.\"

Hazel attended Justin Public Schools, the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University.  She was a long time educator.  She taught in public schools and was an associate professor of business at Decatur Baptist College and continued when they moved to Dallas and the school became Dallas Baptist College (Dallas Baptist University).  She lived in the girls' dorm and was a \"mother\" to all her girls.  She also served as secretary at several churches and with the Baptist Training Union Department.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Justin and taught a ladies Sunday School class until she became ill.  Before her death she was the oldest living member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional sorority for women in education.Her funeral will be on Sunday, August 16, at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Justin with Dennis Linam, Mike Williams, and Bill Harvey conducting the services with a time of viewing from 1:00 until 2:45 at the church.  Burial will follow Justin Cemetery immediately following the service with Rev. Jason Sidler officiating.

She had prayed for many years that a chapel would be built on the DBU campus at a spot that was special to her.  When construction began on the Bo & Patty Pilgrim Chapel her prayers were answered and on her birthday in 2008 she was able to be the first non construction personnel to visit the chapel before its completion.  Memorials may be made to the Chapel Fund at Dallas Baptist University, c/o Mr. Dennis Linam, 3000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211.
