Harold R. McCandless
Harold Richard McCandless, 95, of Denton, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
Harold was born in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania on May 2, 1930 to parents Harold Dwight and Olive Lutz McCandless. After surviving a tough childhood, during which his family was shaken by loss and separation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and began a military career. Early on he was stationed in Bermuda with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, also known as the Hurricane Hunters. After his time there, he was deployed to Burtonwood, England where he met the love of his life, Marjorie Brittles. They married in 1955 and began life as a military family. After various postings, Harold retired from the Air Force in 1971, and the family relocated to Carrollton, TX. Harold began a successful career with International Paper and Georgia Pacific until he retired in 1995. He and Margie moved to Denton to be closer to their children and grandchildren. After Margie's passing in 2014, Harold moved to Good Samaritan Denton Village, (now Denton Village), where he lived for eight years and made many good friends.
Harold had an incredible work ethic. He could fix just about anything that needed repair on a car or in a home–mechanical, plumbing or electrical. He liked building, whether it was additions to homes, sheds, even playhouses. He was a terrific gardener who won Yard of the Month several times in Carrollton and Denton. He was a longtime member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Denton, TX.
Harold is survived by daughter, Michelle Rose (Larry); and grandchildren, Allyson Worley (Clayton), Jacob McCandless, Winston Rose, Olivia Rose, and Lillian Rose and great–grandchildren, Maverick Worley, Bear Worley and Callum Worley, step–sister Mary Lou Kristyak, daughter–in–law Sherri Lloyd McCandless Eubanks, and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the Atlantic.
He is predeceased by wife, Marjorie; son, Howard "Mac" McCandless; brothers, Gerald "Pete" McCandless and Howard McCandless; and sisters, Betty Luntz, Peggy McCandless, and Lois Nye.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at the Denton Village Chapel, 2500 Hinkle Dr., Denton, TX.
