Halbert Chester Boyd, born March 4, 1913, the third of eight children born to Ben and Mollie (Shelton) Boyd, in Daingerfield, Texas, went to live with his Lord on Friday, July 25, 2008, at approximately 6:10 PM. He was 95 years old.
He met Jaquita McCarley in Blue Ridge, Texas in 1939. They were married November 24, 1941, and by 1942, settled in Lewisville, Texas, where they raised three children.
A devout Christian, he was a long standing member of the First Baptist Church of Lewisville, Texas, serving in numerous capacities, including deacon and Sunday School teacher, but most notably by setting an example of Christian charity and faith. He was deeply involved in several civic organizations including the Lions Club, Denton County Farm Bureau as a member of the board of directors, and Texas Retired Teachers Association. He served as Fire Chief for the Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department during the 1940's. January 24, 1993, was officially declared 'Chester Boyd Day' by the city of Lewisville, honoring his many contributions to the community.
Chester was a vocational agriculture teacher for over 40 years, most of which was spent teaching at Lewisville High School. His students remember him for the many trips he took with the ag boys, covering nearly every continental state in the nation. He retired from Lewisville in 1975 after 33 years and later helped establish the Chester Boyd Honorary Scholarship with the Lewisville Education Foundation, for deserving ag students.
He then went on to work for King's Drug Store of Lewisville, delivering medication and kind words to the ill and elderly of Lewisville, until 1995.
Chester was preceded in death by his wife, Jaquita McCarley Boyd, a daughter, Peggy Boyd, four brothers: Thurman (T.L.), James (J.C.), Charles (Buck), and Odie Wayne Boyd, two sisters: Mabel (Snookie) Goggans, and Nadine (Sis) Webb.
He is survived by his sister Ophelia (Lady) Bodwell and husband Herman, of Avinger, Texas, children Gail Silberstein and husband, Ken, of Marietta, Georgia, Hal Boyd and wife Barbara of Sunset, Texas, and Jan Bailey and husband John of Justin, Texas. He is also survived by grandchildren Kris Silberstein and wife Stephanie, Brent Silberstein and wife Debby, James Boyd, Jessie Boyd, Mollie Stephens, as well as Jan's stepchildren Dena Horton and husband Matt, David Bailey and wife Stephanie , Kathy Bailey, Danny Bailey, and Jenny Bailey. His great-grandchildren are Sarah and Alexander Silberstein, and Kathy Bailey's daughter, Kaitlyn Gilbert, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are being handled by Mulkey Mason Funeral Home of Lewisville, Texas. Visitation will be Monday evening, beginning at 6:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Lewisville. The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Lewisville, with a fellowship meal to follow. In consideration of the extreme heat, there will be no graveside service.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Kris Silberstein, Brent Silberstein, and James Boyd, as well as Pat McCurley, Kenneth Feagins, and Robert Stephens. Honorary pallbearers are Roy Crawford, Ray Atkins, Gerald Slater, Gibson Feagins, Edwin Feagins, and James Polser.
The family considers all of Mr. Boyd's former students as well as lifelong friends as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Chester Boyd Honorary Scholarship with the Lewisville Education Foundation. In lieu of cards, the family would treasure receiving any stories, anecdotes or memories of Mr. Boyd.
