Obituary

Gladys A. Bland Commander, 90, of Denton, died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Walnut Place in Dallas.  She was born December 8, 1917 in Cherokee County,  Texas to Wilburn Lamourn and Mattie Clara (Hicks) Bland.  She attended Public Schools in Alto, and Primrose High school in Cherokee County,   and received her B.S. and Med. from Texas Woman's University in Denton.  She was married to James Sidney Commander, on October 14, 1933 in Alto, TX  he died   June 26, 1994,  She was a Elementary School Teacher for the Denton Independent School,  retiring in 1984 from the Newton Rayzor Elementary School.  and she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Denton  The Lady Lions Club, First Baptist Church 39'ers, AARP, and the Retired Teachers Association. Her hobbies were ceremaics, painting and sewing.

A memorial service will be held at   1:00 P.M. on Monday, August 25, 2008 in the Cindy Nichols Chapel of the First Baptist Church, 1100 Malone St.  Denton,  TX with Rev. Scott Hooper,  and Rev. Cliff Feeler, officiating.  Private burial was in the Roselawn Memorial Park, Denton.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Cottonwood Baptist Church Children's Ministry, 273 CR, #527, Dublin, TX 76446 of the First Baptist Church Library, 1100 Malone St. Denton, TX 76201.  Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son 705 N. Locust, Denton, in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Commander is survived by two daughters and sons in law,  Sylvia and Lanny Lyons, of Gainesville,  and Delores and Bob Hooper, of Dublin,  Four Grandchildren  Pamela Lyons Hobbs,  David Lyons, Robert Hooper, and Scott Hooper, and Eleven Great Grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Gladys was preceded in death by her husband,  her parents, by her sisters, Hazel Steed and OIma Holcomb,  brother, Willis Bland.
