Gary Russell Harris passed away peacefully at home under hospice care on June 24, 2026. He was 74 years old.

Gary was born on October 7, 1951, at Flow Hospital in Denton, Texas, to Carl and Claudia Harris. He grew up in Denton alongside his twin sister, Vicki. As a young man, he excelled in track and field, competing for Denton High School and later for North Texas State University.

Gary began his career as a land surveyor before serving for many years as a Floodplain Manager for Denton County. He was known for his quiet demeanor, creativity, quirky humor, and wide-ranging interests. He had a lifelong love of music, building an extensive collection of vinyl records and CDs. He enjoyed reading science fiction and fantasy novels, collecting comic books, playing electric guitar, hiking, birdwatching, and spending time in nature.

On August 8, 1983, Gary married the love of his life, Cindy. Together they shared nearly 43 years of marriage, finding joy in family and life's simple pleasures.

After suffering a major heart attack on December 24, 2011, Gary received the gift of a heart transplant on June 8, 2013, allowing him to enjoy thirteen additional years with his family and friends. During those years, Gary and Cindy especially treasured the opportunity to take memorable trips throughout the United States and beyond. He remained grateful for the generosity of his organ donor and for the exceptional care he received from his medical teams.

Gary is survived by his wife, Cindy Harris; daughter, Miygin Harris Castillo and husband Ramsey Castillo; stepdaughter, Joni Brock and husband Kyle Brock; sister, Vicki Scott and husband David Scott; niece, Nicole Scott; nephew, Justin Puckett and wife Erin Puckett; and grandchildren Margaret and Nathan Brock.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Claudia Harris, and his brother, Billy Harris.

A memorial service celebrating Gary's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Denton, Texas.
