Fred O. Graham, 74, of Denton, recognized area sports figure, passed away February 24, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital of Denton. He was the first full-time sports information director at North Texas, and was inducted into the UNT Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. He was born November 21, 1934 in Paris, Texas to Othal F. and Mabel Nancy (Ritchie) Graham. Following 22 years as Sports Information Director for the University of North Texas, he served as General Manager of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame for 14 years. He also worked for Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys. He was a member of the Texas Sports Writer Assoc. and CoSIDA, College organization of Sports Information Directors of America. He was married to Sidney Sue Smith on April 19, 1958 in Nocona, TX. He was a graduate of Paris High School, Paris
Junior College and North Texas State University (UNT) and a member of the First Christian Church of Denton. During his years at NT, he coined the term \"Mean Green\" for the school and it was adopted for all the schools sports.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 7, 2009 in the First Christian Church, 1203 Fulton St. Denton, with, Rev. John Burton, officiating. With Bill Mercer doing the Eulogy. Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Graham is survived by his wife Sidney Sue Graham, Sons, Gregory Fred Graham, and wife Colleen, Mark S. Graham, and Michael Kirk Graham and wife Shauna, all of Denton, a sister, Betty G. White and husband Dwayne White, Brothers, W. D. and wife Carolyn Graham, Bob L. and wife Michelle Graham, and Jackie L. and Cathy Graham, all of Paris, TX, and five grandchildren, Nathan Graham, Ian Graham, Phelan Graham, Ronan Graham, and Megan Graham, all of Denton.
