Obituary

Elmer Eugene Douglas was born of humble beginnings in Corsicana, TX, the second child of John Henry and Auline Douglas. Elmer spent his childhood in Corsicana, one of eight brothers and sisters living in a small frame house along with his mother, father, grandfather and uncle. Elmer started at the age of eleven, helping out the family by working with his father as a groundskeeper at the Corsicana cemetery. Elmer attended Corsicana High School, graduating in 1946. For the next several years, Elmer worked in various jobs including Hodges Grocery. In 1948, Elmer joined the Air Force, completing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base before being assigned to Williams Air Force Base in Chandler, AZ where he served two years active duty. Discharged in 1950, Elmer moved to Dallas and completed 4 years in the Air Force Reserves. Upon moving to Dallas, Elmer obtained a job with the Parker Pen Company, where he met his bride to be. After dating for several years, Pat finally gave Elmer an ultimatum and they were married on May 29, 1954. Their first child, Catherine was born in 1955. Elmer worked a series of jobs and, in some cases two-three jobs at the same time, to help make ends meet and get the family started. Their second child, Randall, was born in 1959. Elmer continued working various jobs until settling on the automotive repair/tire industry and going to work for The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, starting in sales but rapidly moving up through the ranks as a Store Manager and District Manager. Their third and final child, Cynthia was born in 1965. During this time, Elmer and Pat were world travelers with trips to Mexico, Yugoslavia and Italy along with a Caribbean Cruise. Elmer left Goodyear in 1979 and opened his own Goodyear Franchise. Later, Elmer continued with his retail management career, working with Firestone Tire and Rubber Company as a store manager. Upon his retirement, Elmer held several part time jobs to stay busy including Turner Hardware and HR Block. Elmer enjoyed his family, working in his yard and his grandkids. Elmer was preceded in death by his wife of 59 ½ years, Patricia Ann on November 17, 2013. Also preceding Elmer were his parents, John Henry and Auline Douglas, brothers Bobby Douglas and Ernest Douglas, and sisters Evelyn Douglas and Elsie Powell. Elmer is survived by sisters Ellen Nutt of Corsicana, TX, Edna and brother-in-law Buddy Schulz of Inez, TX and brother John Eldon and sister-in-law Kathy Douglas of Garland TX. Elmer leaves behind two daughters, Cathey Douglas, Cindy and son-in-law Eddie Rynders, son Randy and daughter-in-law Davi Anne Douglas and three loving grandchildren, Emily Douglas, Douglas Rynders and Ethan Douglas. Elmer was interred beside his wife at Roselawn Cemetery in Denton TX on Tuesday, September 16. Elmer will be terribly missed but lovingly remembered.
