Douglas John Wilcox, 89, of Denton, Texas passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2022 at his home with his loved ones by his side. Doug was born on July 11, 1933 in Lynch, Nebraska to the late George and Ruth Wilcox.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Laura of 67 years; their daughter Sherri (Cheryl) Darby husband (George) of Lantana, Texas, his son Johnny (John) wife Bun (Bernadette) of Spotsylvania, Virginia; his sister Ginny (Virginia) Allen (Don) of Auburn, Alabama; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother George Wilcox and sister Archie (Ardath) Wilcox Harms.
Doug received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska and his Master's Degree from Perdue University.
He retired as an employee of the U.S. Federal Government. He was also a soldier in the Army (Korean War), member of the Coast and Geodetic Survey, in the missile program at Vandenberg AFB, California. He was also involved in the Inter American Geodetic Survey in Bogota Columbia and in Asuncion Paraguay, United Nations- Trinidad and Tobago and an Instructor of military mapping and surveying at Fort Belvoir, VA. He was instrumental in the creation and development of the GPS for military use. He also worked for the Bureau of Land Management, and was an Associate professor for Surveying and mapping at New Mexico State University and Conway Community College in South Carolina.
Doug volunteered with the American Red Cross and the (NARFE) National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Doug was a loving husband and always concerned about his family. He enjoyed his family so very much. He told the best stories of adventures, travels and perseverance through adversity. He was a Christian, a patriot, a lover of God and country. He was a fun loving man that loved to make those he loved laugh, had a witty sense of humor, a warm smile and a heart of gold. He will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Parkinson's foundation.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
