IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorris Jean
Benz
January 19, 1930 – January 2, 2017
Dorris Jean Benz passed away January 2, 2017 at the age of 86. She was born to
Doris Clark (McInerney) Tabor and Otis Rendor Tabor on January 19, 1930, both life long
residents of Denton, Texas.
Jean was a 1947 graduate of Denton High School where she was Vice President of the
Spanish Club, sang in the choir, and participated in the school Pep Club. Then went on
to attend Texas Women's University for one year on the Badminton team. She moved over to
the University of North Texas where she attained a Bachelor degree in Business Education
in 1953.
Jean met and later married George A. Benz on April 14, 1951. They both finished their
degrees in 1953 and then moved to Crawford, Texas. They were both fortunate enough to be
hired by Crawford High School where Jean taught bookkeeping and typing. George was the
football coach and together they put on the game, the cheerleading, and halftime
ceremonies. Over the years Jean put her education to work as an assistant to the
Reading Clinic director located at Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma and later
as a teacher for the San Antonio Independent School district.
Jean enjoyed many interests and hobbies. One of which was founding a League of Women
Voters chapter in Edmond, Oklahoma and then continued that interest for many years after
moving to San Antonio, Texas in the capacity of Vice President, Editor of the VOTER
newsletter, and served on the Board for thirteen years.
Jean loved to cook and entertain and took French cooking lessons so she could improve her
skills and treated her friends and family to fabulous meals.
In 1988 Jean became very interested in genealogy and spent most of her free time
successfully tracing her family roots. Her interests allowed her to meet many wonderful
people along the way. Jean had a wealth of friends. But above all her many
accomplishments her favorite was being the best grandmother ever.
Jean is survived by her brother James O. Tabor and wife OlaMae(Taylor)Tabor;
sister-in-law Patricia Ann(Bradford) Tabor; daughter Lynda(Benz)Brodtmann; granddaughter
Christine(Brodtmann)Griffin and husband Christopher C. Griffin and great grandson Austin
Reed Griffin; and many nieces and nephews.
