Dorothy Karnes Cherry died Friday, November 10, 2006 at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock,Texas. Celebration of Life services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 2006 at the Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust in Denton, Texas. Interment will be a private ceremony at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Denton.
Dorothy was born January 5, 1921 in Green Valley, Texas to Clarance and Lillie Springer Maxwell. She graduated from high school in Denton, attended North Texas State Teachers College, and completed her bachelors and masters degrees in education at The University of Connecticut. She married John Karnes, Jr. in 1941 and Scott Cherry in 1971.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and her brother Billy Tom Maxwell.
She is survived by sons Merle Karnes and wife, Anna, of Lubbock and John Karnes and wife, Saundra, of Waco; grandchildren, Lisa Davila & husband, David of Houston, James Karnes of Conroe, and Caley Cooper & husband, Val of Lubbock; and great-grandchildren, Dylan and Marissa Davila of Houston and Caitlyn and Creed Cooper of Lubbock.
In 1966, Dorothy was the first teacher hired at Waco's McLennan Community College. She retired from community college teaching in 1970 to assist Scott in building their library furniture distributorship for North and West Texas. She was an accomplished oil painter and enjoyed all forms of art. Dorothy and her husband Scott were active in the Cowboy Artist of America Museum in Kerrville. An avid reader, Dorothy instilled a love of reading in her children and grandchildren.
