Doris Freeland Marley Cass Shumway
August 26, 1926 – April 6, 2016

Our Mom, Doris Cass Shumway, 89, of Denton TX, went to walk with her Lord on April 6, 2016. Doris was born in Baltimore, MD, the only child of William Roland Cass and Elsie Mae Freeland Ritchie. She grew up riding her horse, Fordie and her dog, Ranger, was always nearby.

When Doris was a teenager, her family moved to Florida where she played the bass drum in the marching band at Winter Park High School. The Cass family lived in a beautiful, 2 story house with a wraparound front porch. Her Mom had a walk-through garden in the back yard. Her favorite memories were of her mom playing the piano while her dad would sing. After high school, she attended John B Stetson University in Deland FL.

Doris met Robert Louis Shumway when she worked for the Headquarters of the 14th Air Force in Orlando where he was stationed. They married on August 23, 1946 at the Grace Episcopal Church in Baltimore, MD. From this marriage she is survived by her son, Michael B Shumway of Stockton, CA and daughters Millicent Anne Sawyer and Freeland Cass Smith, both of Cross Roads, TX, Grandchildren, Barbara Carrie Humphrey, Kelly Marie DiSalvatore, Robert Burton Shumway, Ryne Michael Shumway, Barrhet Asher Smith and by her great grandchildren, Caelan, McKenna, Tye, Grayson, Anastasia, Alyana, Landon and Alexis.

Doris served as President of the Vestry, a licensed lay reader and a member of the Order of St Luke in Florida at the Gloria DEI Episcopalian Church. Doris moved to Denton, TX in 1996 and joined the Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she attended Bible studies and volunteered to send out the cards to all members of the congregation that were in need of prayer.

Because of her love of reading, she volunteered with Habitat of Humanity's Ruth's Room and was in charge of the book section for many years. She remained an avid reader her whole life.

When Doris moved to the Carriage House in Denton she found a home where games were played regularly and she loved games. Her favorites were cards, bingo, baseball and then there was her ever "famous"..... wheelchair dancing!

In 2013, Doris moved to Denton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. There she found a home with beautiful gardens, birds, lots of daily activities and games. She attended Denton Bible Church there and shared cookies by Buzz with all her friends. Dancing with the Miller Band when they came once a month was her favorite time! Her special nurses and aides were like a family to her that she loved. They supported and held her up until the end.

In her life she was blessed with many good friends as well as many faithful and loving dogs, Turk, Panda, Pru, Garth and she is survived by Sonny. Her pets gave her comfort and strength throughout her lifetime.

The children and Family of Doris want to say that Our Mom (or as the kids called her "G") was the rock that held our family together. She was always there for us and leaves behind a place in our hearts that will remain empty until we see her again one day.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30pm on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at the Trinity Presbyterian Church for all family and friends.
