Donald Jerry Scaggs, 77, of Denton, passed away Friday, April 29, 2016 after courageously battling lung cancer for 8 years.
Mr. Scaggs was born on May 24, 1938 in Crawfordsville, Indiana to Harold and Mildred Scaggs. He served in the United States Navy from 1958 until he was Honorably Discharged in 1962. He received a BS in Art Education/Studio from Indiana University in 1963, and a Masters in Drawing and Painting from Purdue University in 1967. After teaching in Indiana and Pennsylvania he taught Drawing, Painting and Printmaking at the University of North Texas for 32 years until early retirement in 2000. He was awarded Professor Emeritus in 2002. His prints and paintings are included in numerous collections, both public and private.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Jane Scaggs, and is survived by their sons, Stephen Scaggs and his wife, Anne of Denton; Carter Scaggs and his wife, Debi of Denton. He later married Theresa "Terry" Maldonado on October 28, 2000 in Denton and is also survived by his stepson, Ian Kristian Luker and his wife, Johanna of Austin; stepdaughter, Kerri Luker and her partner, James Sheeran and his son of Austin; four brothers; six grandchildren; three step grandchildren; one great grandson; and three step great grandchildren; two sisters-in law, Alice & Alma Maldonado; and one brother-in-law, Lee Maldonado and his wife, Dorothy of Odessa; numerous nieces and nephews. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 5, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm with a Rosary starting at 7:00 pm at Mulkey Mason Funeral Home. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, May 6, at 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2255 N. Bonnie Brae St., Denton.
