Donald Charles Palermo, 71, of Denton, slipped quietly into Heaven Friday, October 5, 2007 at Denton Regional Medical Center, leaving this world a better place because of him. . He was born September 12, 1936 in Bryan, TX to Don and Leona Christine (Price) Palermo. He was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan, after attended Texas A & M University, he transferred to the University of North Texas and received his B. A. degree in business administration and B.S. degree in secondary education with an emphasis in political science. In 1966 he received his M. Ed. Degree in Counseling and Guidance. He completed many hours following his master's degree in higher education with an emphasis in student services and psychology.. He was married to Judy Hancock on April 1, 1961 in Longview, TX He served in the USAF Medical Corps, and the Reserve for seven years. He was employed from Sept. 1, 1969 until he retired on Aug. 22, 1995 from the University of North Texas where he was the Director of Research Services, Department of Admissions. He is a member of the Unity Christian Church of Grapevine. Don was also recognized as a leader in Admissions throughout the State of Texas and the Nation. He rose to the ranks of President of the Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers in 1983. Nationally, he served on various committees for the College Board. He was an active member of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officer, the American Personnel and Guidance Association A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, October 12. 2007 in the First Baptist Church, 1100 Malone St. Denton, TX with, Rev. Carol Record and Rev. Ellen Davis, officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. The family will be at the Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust, Denton, for visitation from 6:00 till 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 11, 2007. Memorials may be made to the Donald C. (Donny) Palermo, Jr. Creative Writing Scholarship Fund at the University of North Texas, P.O. Box 311370 UNT Sta, Denton, TX 76203, or Unity Church of Grapevine, P. O. Box 667, Grapevine, TX 76099. Pallbearers will be Thomas Palermo, Earl Jackson, Mark Deer, Andrew Deer, Jerry Earwood, and Melvin Gouge. Mr. Palermo is survived by his wife Judy Palermo, of Denton, sister in law Jo Ann Deer, of Sweetwater, Nephews, Mark William Deer, of Midland, and Andrew Charles Deer, of Grapevine, and several cousins of the Palermo and Dorman families. He was preceded in death by his son Donald C. (Donny) Palermo Jr. on June 23, 1985, and his parents.
