Obituary

On Monday, December 5, 2022, Charles Benjamin Langham, age 95, passed away after a three year bout with Alzheimer's. He was preceeded in death by his wife of 42 years, Betty Joyce, who died in June of 2018 and grandson, Jared Redwine, who passed away in December of 1998.

Charles was born on November 27, 1927 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Corbit Benjamin and Madeline Augusta Langham.  He is survived by his sister, Betty Nabors, of Denton, two daughters, Linda Fowler, of Marble Falls, and Charlotte Hodge and husband Jim, of Dallas; three sons, Aubrey Redwine and wife Cindy, of Bellville, Mark Redwine, and wife Erin, of Kennard, TX., and Charles Redwine, of Cleveland, TX. They had eight grandchildren--Chris, Kevin, Lisa, and Amy Redwine; Courtney Robertson Shields and Cameron Robertson Losee; William and Elizabeth Fowler. There are ten great grandchildren—Benjamin, Jace, Luke, Jared and Colt, Connor, Cooper, Stella, and Eric and Alia.

Charles graduated from Denton High School in 1945.  He then attended Texas A&M University before joining the US Navy.  There, he served and was on the USS Iowa in the Bikini Islands at the time of the Atomic Bomb Testing. Crew members were sworn to secrecy for fifty years. He later joined the US Air Force and was based at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas.  After serving there, he moved to Midland, Texas, where he worked for Shell Oil Company.  He began as a draftsman and gradually moved his way up within the company.  In 1974, he was transferred to Houston where he met and married Betty Freitag Redwine. He continued as a Senior Engineer in Houston designing and managing the construction of gasoline plants in Texas and Michigan. He later retired after 35 years of service.

Upon retirement, Charles and Betty moved to Bellville, Texas, where they designed and built their forever home.  He was an excellent craftsman and built all of the cabinetry for the kitchen and bathrooms as well as custom moldings in the living and dining rooms, bathrooms and hallways. They took great pride in their home and neighborhood. Charles was called upon by many of his neighbors to either build or repair a piece of furniture. He did that with a willing heart and absolute perfection.

They both enjoyed fishing in the Gulf and spent many weeks each year in Rockport, TX as well as camping in Northern New Mexico. They also loved working in their yard and watching Wheel of Fortune in the evening.

The family would like to thank the staff at Denton Rehabilitation for their loving care of him during the last days of his life. We also give a special thank you to Nurse Beverly of Solaris Hospice Care who provided love and support to Charles and his family at the end of life.

Visitation will be on Saturday morning, December 17, from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. at The Schmidt Funeral Home, 12029 Hwy.36, in Bellville, TX.  A graveside service will be held in Hempstead at The Hempstead Cemetery at 2:00 PM.
