Obituary

Anthony Wayne McCollum was born on September 3, 1944 in Macomb, IL to Margaret and Harold McCollum. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1962 and went on to receive his BS from Western Illinois University in 1965. In 1969, Tony gained his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Arkansas.

On February 15,1963, Tony married his childhoood sweetheart, Barbara Bell. They were blessed with three sons, Mike, Craig and Aaron and later joined by three daughters-in-law, with whom Tony shared a very special love. The family continued to grow throughout the years with seven beautiful grandchildren.

After a varied and successful 30 year career at Eastman Chemical Co., he retired as the VP of Global Analytical Services on November 30, 1999. He did love his work and the people at Eastman. Upon retirement, he taught a business chemistry course at the University of Arkansas for two summers. Teaching was one of Tony's biggest passions!

Church was a cornerstone of the McCollum family. Tony especially loved working with youth and was a counselor, director or keynote speaker at the Christian Youth Fellowship Camp in Athens, TX for 15 years. His favorite topic was grace and he always said," that the best way to learn something was to teach it." He was awarded the office of Honorary Elder Emeritus at First Christian Church in Longview Texas. Most recently he completed a term as Elder at Creekwood Christian Church.

Tony was a fierce competitor. It really didn't matter what the game or sport was. What you knew was that his goal was to win! Coaching his sons and their teammates was one of the joys of his life. These past years he has had the opportunity to watch his grandchildren play many games and occasionally give them a little instruction. Always the teacher!

Health issues presented some challenges during retirement but his faith and love of family and friends kept him going. In spite of these challenges, Tony enjoyed traveling, playing golf with his golf buddies, visiting friends and attending grandchildren events.

The grace with which Tony faced his health issues was an inspiration to all. He made a difference in people's lives. He went to be with the Lord on January 20, 2010.
