Alice Margaret Donoho "Donnie" Holt, passed away January 12th in Denton. She was born June 26, 1917 in Denton and lived most of her years there. She graduated from high school when she was fifteen. After graduating from Texas Woman's University, she was hired as a teacher at San Marcos Baptist Academy. One of the family's favorite stories occurred at the Academy when the president of that institution told a young male teacher that he had just hired the girl the young teacher would someday marry. The president was right, and Donnie and Brooks Holt were married at the First Baptist Church in Denton in 1937. Then they returned to South Texas to live.
Three years later, her mother died suddenly of a heart attack. Since she was expecting her first child, she and Brooks returned to Denton because they were afraid that Donnie might lose the baby after the shock of her mother's death. The baby made it and son, Judd, is happy it did. Son, Don, was born just before Brooks went to war. Daughter, Carol, was born after the war in 1948.
Donnie was a very involved person. She taught junior high and high school English, was a school counselor at Denton Junior High and Denton High School for years, and had a radio program on KDNT. She and Brooks were active in the First Baptist Church.
Family and friends were an intricate part of Donnie's active life. Her dinner bridge club met monthly for fifty plus years. She was a member of the Modern Era of the Ariel Club and also found time to travel the world. Donnie was also a dedicated member of the Benjamin Lyon Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was fascinated with links to the past and genelogy. Donnie was always having, going to, or preparing for a party! She loved getting family and friends together around a generous table filled with homemade food. She was a wonderful cook and hostess, sharing her recipes with everyone.
As a special tribute on her 90th birthday, her grandchildren presented her with a plaque of the "90 Things We Love About Grandmom". She had a special part in each of their lives. Also in celebration of her 90th, Judd, Don, and Carol returned her to her favorite vacation spot, Green Mountain Falls, Colorado.
Donnie is survived by her son, Judd , his wife, Suzy; their three sons, Josh Holt and children, Caleigh and Connor, Judd Holt IV, his wife, Kerry, their children, Judd V and Ashley, Dr. Jonathan Holt, his wife, Devin, their children, Sidney and Anna.
